Junior Dante Zou and senior Andrew Karpman work together in their Medical Interventions class taught by Doug Verby to create a transhumeral (above the elbow) articulating prosthetic arm with individually movable fingers, wrist and elbow joints. The assignment’s goal was to use the arm to drink a cup of water without spilling. “Through this project, Andrew and I learned how even a simple everyday task we take for granted, such as drinking a cup of water, can be difficult to model accurately due to the complex nature of human movement coordination,” Zou said. “Building our models with limited materials also meant that we had to tackle many material issues and adapt to complete our challenge.”
