What issues matter to you the most in this election? Why? How do those issues connect to your life and the lives of those you care about?
I don’t know much about the issues that are getting tossed around, but the ones that matter to me most are those surrounding safety. These issues connect to the people I care about because I want the people I care about to be safe.
When did you first start caring about these issues? Was there an event that happened or a conversation you had that piqued your interest?
Probably in seventh or eighth grade—many of my classmates talked about their views then.
If you could take a class on one or more of these issues or dig deeper through your own research, what else would you want to know? What questions would you want answered?
I would want to know more about the different points of view of the two candidates and what is different about them. I would also want to learn more from the media and maybe take a journalism class.
What issues do other young people around you seem to be concerned with, whether you agree with them or not? In other words, when your friends and classmates are discussing something politics-related, what’s the conversation usually about?
[Young people] don’t have deep conversations about politics, but whenever they do bring it up, it’s normally just about who they want to win.
Do you think people your age can affect meaningful change regarding these issues? Why or why not? Have you ever taken any steps to try to address these problems?
I think that they can; a lot of people can have strong points of view and are good at getting their point across. Also, younger people who are on social media can get more information.
Have you been following the presidential race? Do you know where the two candidates, former President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, stand on your issues? Which candidate, if either, do you think will make positive changes to the things you care about? Why?
I haven’t followed the presidential race enough to know where the two candidates stand on some issues I care about. I do want to learn more about the case though.
Do you think young voters will be energized by the 2024 election? Do you predict that they will be motivated to vote this year? Why or why not?
I think that they will be motivated to vote this year because of how much this presidential race has been brought up on the media.
