In a game-changing move, the football program joined forces with Brentwood High School to form a new powerhouse team, the Brentwood-Clayton Greyhounds. Despite the challenges of merging two teams, the Greyhounds triumphed in their season, boasting a 7-5 record and securing second place in the 2023 District State Championship.
The Greyhounds concluded their best season since their 9-4 record in 2012-13. Their final game of the 2023 season, played at Lutheran North on Nov. 10, included a highlight from Brentwood senior Arris Harris.
Greyhounds opened their scoring in the second quarter with a 56-yard pass to Harris from Brentwood senior Trenton Mitchell, then went on to do a 2-point conversion afterward.
On the 45℉ night, Nov.10, the Greyhounds faced Lutheran North. Despite a hard-fought game, the team fell short with a final score of 54-14. Despite not clinching the top spot in the District State Championship, the Greyhounds ended a season of change and growth with a promising outlook for 2024.
“Looking back on our season, I am extremely proud of the program,” Head Football Coach Doug Verby said. “Eleven coaches united almost 60 players from two schools for a common mission and vision.”
According to Verby, the players and coaches worked to continue the high expectations of Brentwood football and elevate the expectations of what football can be at Clayton.
“Our five-game win streak was incredible. In that span, we won two Homecoming games (one at Brentwood and one at Clayton) and two playoff games, including a thrilling victory over Vashon on a late field goal to seal the victory,” Verby said
“Not only did the team manage the merger of the Brentwood and Clayton football programs, but they finished the season with a 5-1 conference record, second in the District, and a 7-5 overall record,” Verby said.
“There was a lot to be proud of this season,” Verby said.
