A Motza-REALLY Amazing Speech & Debate Tournament

The Speech & Debate team hosts their annual tournament for over 300 debaters in the region.
Competitors enjoy the exciting tradition of dropping banners to announce who moved on to the next round.
  • Seniors AnMei Deck and Maria Mohr announce the winners of the raffle. Goodies such as AirPods, a jumbo pizza Squishmallow and a Starbucks gift card were raffled off. Over $1200 was raised and will be donated to the St. Louis Food Bank. Mohr, who was in charge of running the concession and raffle stand said, “When I got to tell everyone how much we ended up raising it was emotional. I was so grateful that we are able to do good for our community.”

  • Competitors enjoy the exciting tradition of dropping banners to announce who moved on to the next round. “You can feel the electricity in the air,” Senior Charlie Rubin said. “All 400 or so people are staring wide-eyed at the same place, waiting to see if they qualified or not.”

  • Senior Carter Davis served as the Tournament Director and was in charge of organizing rounds and keeping the event running on time. He and faculty advisor Kim Zustiak scour a schematic to correct a problem.

  • Senior Charlie Rubin announces awards at the tournament while fully committed to the cheesey theme. “I think everyone collectively agreed that we wanted something unique and memorable. […] The cheese theme started as a crazy idea, but before we knew it we were thinking of cheese puns […] It all fell into place,” he said.

  • Every student on the team work at the tournament. Freshman Asher Stitziel was on judges committee. “Being able to talk and hang out with the upperclassmen was a really cool. I got to learn about what their time was like on the team and it really helped me learn how to structure my high school career as a speech and debate member” he said.

  • Junior Charlie Meyers is on the Speech & Debate board as the Public Speaking Coordinator. She was responsible for announcing speech awards at the tournament. “CFC was a great experience for me. I loved running extemp draw and being able to bond with the rest of the team,” she said.

JiaLi Deck is a senior. When she first joined the Globe her sophomore year, she couldn't have ever imagined being Editor in Chief; however, as time went on she realized how passionate she is about writing and designing for the Globe. In the past two years, she has gotten to write stories which have made an difference and design pages of a nationally distributed magazine. She is immensely proud to get to lead of such a fantastic publication and she hopes to continue Globe's important mission in her final year on staff. In addition to Globe, JiaLi participates in Speech & Debate and is a 1st company member of the pre-professional dance division at COCA. She is also a commission graphic artist who designs T-Shirts, logos, and other digital projects.
