Half & Half’s Eggs Benedict

Half & Half

★★★★☆ | 8135 Maryland Ave

Located on Maryland Ave―within walking distance from CHS―Half & Half offers a wide variety of traditional brunch items. We visited at around 10:30 on a Wednesday, and because we came at peak brunch hours we had to wait around 20 minutes for a table.

The restaurant’s title dish offers an iconic American breakfast: eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. The Half & Half was not exceptional, but met the standard for such a classic dish.

We began our brunch with their classic french toast. The first thing we noticed about the french toast was the presentation: two thickly-cut slabs were stacked on a plate, dusted in powdered sugar. Overall they tasted quite good; however, I was caught off-guard by how thick and filling they were. The portion size was just big enough to provide a satisfying meal without leaving me desiring much more.

The next item we tried was Half & Half’s stack of pancakes. As a staple sweet food in breakfasts, we were eager to see how their pancakes would compare to others. Like the french toast, we found the pancakes to be very filling. While they were good, they were not anything special, they just tasted like your average pancakes. Also, the small cup of syrup with which they were served was not enough to satisfy our sweet tooth.

As we moved from the sweet side of the menu to the savory, we started with the classic eggs Benedict. The presentation was pretty good overall, and the eggs were good. The side of potatoes that came with this dish was what distinguished it, however, adding a nice contrast to the texture of the eggs.

Half & Half’s Eggs Benedict

We had an overall pleasant experience at Half & Half. The food was good and the atmosphere was nice and bright. If you’re looking for a nice place for a traditional brunch, this location would be a good choice, especially due to its close proximity to CHS and downtown Clayton.

These cinnamon donut holes were coated in powdered sugar and came with a side of chocolate dipping sauce. The side was not terrible, but the slight dryness prevented it from placing on the top donuts of STL list.
