The Theory of Everything
“The Theory of Everything,” is a surprisingly insightful movie that depicts Stephen Hawking’s life. Directed by James Marsh, the film is based on the book “The Theory of Everything,” written by Hawking’s wife, Jane Wilde.
Stephen Hawking is globally known as one of the most acclaimed physicists and scientists of mankind for discovering the existence of the black hole. The movie portrays the struggles with Hawking’s love life, scientific works and children, as his disease–ALS–progresses. The cast includes the actor Eddie Redmayne, who starred in the Oscar winning “Les Misérables,” playing the main role of Stephen Hawking. Felicity Jones, an actress famous for her role in the action-packed movie “The Amazing Spider Man,” portrays the love interest of Hawking, Jane Wilde.
The film has been nominated 51 times and has currently won 11 awards. It has even been nominated for one of the most prestigious awards, the 2015 Golden Globes. “The Theory of Everything” has been nominated for “Best Picture,” Eddie Redmayne for “Best Actor,” Felicity Jones for “Best Actress,” Anthony McCArten for “Best Adapted Screenplay” and Jóhann Jóhannsson for “Best Score.”
To date, the film has grossed 20 million dollars in the United States.
In 1963, Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and was given two years to live. The films revolves around Hawking’s journey to fight his disease, encountering many obstacles. The actors realistically illustrated and expressed the struggles of Hawking’s path to deal with his unfortunate fate. The film portrays how Hawking wasn’t the most providing father, but he unconditionally loved his three children and put in his effort to help whenever he could.
This film focuses mainly on his disease impacting his family rather than his famous works. The story of Stephen Hawking is relatively well-known so the storyline was somewhat predictable and felt a little cliché.
The speed of the movie was a little erratic, at some points rushed and at other times dragged. However, the film still gave a nice coverage of the most impactful years of Hawking’s life.
Probably the most powerful aspect of the film is that it makes the audience think about how much they take for granted.
“However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.” -Stephen Hawking.
