Sauce On The Side
Sauce on the Side opened up its second location on Forsyth over the summer, following the highly-successful flagship restaurant located in Downtown St. Louis.
The restaurant is owned by restaurant veterans Dan Porzel, Ryan Mangialardo and Brendon Maciariello, three friends who decided to open their own place.
Sauce on the Side offers a wide selection of calzones, as well as salads and dessert calzones. The options range from the St. Louis-inspired calzone Meat Me in St. Louie to the Garden, a vegetarian option. If you are not fond of any of the calzone choices, no worries, you can always build your own, extending to type of oil you want brushed on the calzone as well as, of course, the sauce that comes on the side.
I visited the fast-casual restaurant for lunch on a weekend, and the place was hopping. The atmosphere is nice but casual, and although the line was long, it moved quickly.
The fourteen calzones on the menu are priced from seven to ten dollars. I went with The Duke, which cost ten dollars. The calzones are made to order, and are approximately the size of your face. Stuffed with a flavorful blend of BBQ chicken, bacon, cheese and tangy corn salsa, The Duke was fluffy and warm with a nice toasty crunch on the edges.
I would definitely order the Duke again. If you’re ordering a calzone, you probably don’t even need to order a salad, as the calzone itself is very filling.
The food was fantastic and a little pricey, but the colossal calzone portion made up for it. Overall, Sauce on the Side is an impressive new addition to Downtown Clayton.
