Monuments Men Review

The film opens with a dramatic shot of art historian Frank Stokes, played by George Clooney, addressing Franklin Delano Roosevelt himself about the importance of saving priceless works of art from the destruction of the Nazis.
FDR is moved and he sanctions Stokes to assemble a rag-tag team of art enthusiasts from a variety of backgrounds to accompany him on his mission to rescue the lost masterpieces.
The backgrounds of the group members are briefly touched on montage style, but we really don’t get to develop a full sense of the characters. Nevertheless, James Granger (Matt Damon) the museum curator, Richard Campbell (Bill Murray) the architect, Walter Garfield (John Goodman) the sculptor, Jean Claude Clermont (Jean Dujardin) the art dealer, Preston Savitz (Bob Balaban), another art historian and Donald Jeffries (Hugh Bonneville) embark to Germany.
The film provides a look at the realities of World War II sprinkled with just the right amount of comic relief. Though I am no art connoisseur, the movie had a way of making me appreciate the priceless works of art.
All of the characters had seemingly interesting backgrounds, but they were not explored, nor did the characters develop significantly, but the film is still definitely worth seeing.
