Unlike most programs in the school, the Speech, Debate, and Interpretation team competes in two separate District tournaments for two different organizations.
MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Activities Association) Districts take place this weekend at Parkway South High School. This competition decides who makes the state tournament. To do so, an individual or team must finish in the top few spots (varies per event) against many competitors. Last year, Clayton qualified their readers’ theater team, along with three other individuals to state. MSHSAA is also the governing body for most high school sports.
NFL (National Forensics League) Districts take place the following weekend. Some events started last weekend, but the bulk occur the weekend after MSHSAA Districts. NFL qualifies individuals to the national competition. Last year, Clayton had three national qualifiers.
For some people, it is an extremely tough turnaround. Many members of the squad compete in both District competitions, often in multiple events each weekend. On top of all of this, mock trial team has a competition this Thursday. Many of these members also compete in the District tournament cycle.
The team is coached by Justin Seiwell, who also teaches English at the high school.
