In 2007, the Floridian quintet better known as Mayday Parade first broke into the pop punk scene with the release of their first album, “A Lesson in Romantics.†They quickly became known for their catchy music, filled with pain and love in every lyric. Since then, they’ve released an EP and another three albums, including their most recent release, “Monsters In The Closet.â€
Released on October 8, 2013, “Monsters In The Closet†is the culmination of everything the band has learned since the release of their debut album. While some might criticize the Tallahassee locals for not mixing up their sound, others may argue that the album reflects the development of their sound.
“Monsters In The Closet†has a more distinctive, edgier sound than previous albums. Each of the 12 new compositions contain lyrics that resonate the pain and love the writers were going through. Frontman Derek Sanders also reflects this emotion in his voice, especially in what could be considered their best ballad yet, “Hold Onto Me.†Sanders’ voice bends and breaks in many of the songs on the album, but his pain and emotion is palpable as he sings “I’m a drifter’s body in an open sea/And I’ve seen my reflection staring right back at me/With no place to go and you’re left all alone/There’s no place like home.â€
Without a doubt, Mayday Parade has released another hit, with “Monsters In The Closet†debuting at number 10 on the Billboard 200. It is incontrovertible that the Floridian quintet has continued their trend of hit records with emotional songs, and will likely continue to do so with the release of another album or EP in the next few years.
