Though it was their first year under new coach Tom Redmond, the girls’ soccer team continued to improve in 2013. The team finished with a record of 11-10 and the transition went smoothly with Redmond at the helm.
The Greyhounds were led by quad-captains Meg Sutter, Christina DiFelice, Anna DiFelice and Emily Widder, all of whom were seniors. During the season, the Greyhounds had many impressive wins, including victories over John Burroughs, Whitefield and Parkway West.
Along with the four captains, senior Emma Riley will also be graduating. Riley started as goalie for the JV team.
The Greyhounds had eight players receive all-conference honors. Sutter, Christina DiFelice, junior Abby Rivard and junior Caroline Avery were on first team all-conference. Junior Lauren Indivino, sophomore Arynne Zimmerman, sophomore Bridget Boeger and freshman Gabby Boeger made second team all-conference.
Many other Greyhound players turned in strong seasons. Junior Sarah Aiello scored seven times and also chipped in as a goalie and junior Izzy Greenblatt was the starting goalie in her first full year on varsity. Sophomore Lindsey Anderson had a successful second season on varsity, as did junior Rebecca Stiffelman. Though plagued by injuries throughout the season, junior Maryland Gund was also a strong presence on the defensive side of the ball.
Varsity soccer also saw many new faces in 2013. Juniors Paige Dennis, Maddy Grasser and Sophia Rotman had nice rookie seasons.
Avery was happy with how the season ended up, but will miss the presence of the team’s senior leaders.
“This year was one of the closest I’ve been with the other girls, and I think that friendship helped with the overall team dynamic, on and off the field!†Avery said. “We may not have gone out of districts on top, but we sure ended with a great game against MICDS. We will really miss all of the fun and hard work from our seniors!â€
