A great philosopher, Confucius once said, “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.â€
And while the average CHS student does not have the energy for reflection making or the time to spare for mistake doing, imitation is an option that will always be available through the Words Of Wisdom (WOW) Speaker series at CHS.
“The idea was to have people in our community that would be speakers, they would literally impart their words of wisdom onto the students and faculty and general community here at CHS,†Sponsor of WOW club and the Principal of CHS, Dan Gutchewsky said, “and the idea was to capitalize on the experience and the wealth of knowledge that some of our people have and at the same time, its a way of building community and building relationships by learning more about one another.â€
The WOW club was started by a group of students who brought the idea to the administration at the beginning of last year.
“It’s just a cool opportunity for students to come, and hear teachers talk about whatever they want to talk about,†Senior Oji Onwumere said.
Onwumere is part of WOW’s steering committee. She applied for the position last year when WOW first began. Now, she and seven other students are in control of the organization of the ever abundant words of wisdom.
“Usually most of our planning takes place in the beginning of the year, and thats just to select the speakers who we want to speak. Teachers are nominated by staff and students,†Onwumere said, “and after we set up the list of speakers, we advertise and try to get students involved.â€
Those interested in WOW can sign up for the email list. The club also has a Facebook page and Youtube account with videos of previous speakers. For those that haven’t yet had a chance to participate this year, there is still one last speaker planned in May.
“For the future, we just want to keep up student participation in the events and try to draw a bigger crowd, and then also diversify our speakers,†Onwumere said.
Wisdom is always in high demand, and as long as the flow of speakers never stems, WOW club will never lack in providing advices and lessons of wisdom to those in need.
