The St. Louis Cardinals have often had pitching problems this 2012 season, but rarely hitting problems. However, on Friday night, both Cardinal pitching and hitting was nowhere to be found.
Mets’ pitcher Johan Santana hurled the first no hitter in the team’s history, blanking the Cardinals through nine innings. The Cardinals also let eight runs cross the plate.
The Mets were founded in 1962, and have had pitchers such as Doc Gooden and Tom Seaver. However, before Santana, the team had never had a no hitter.
Santana struck out David Freese for the third out in the ninth inning.
Contreversy arose in the game, as Carlos Beltran, a former Mets player, was robbed of a single by the umpiring crew, who ruled it a foul ball. Had it been ruled a hit, the no hitter would have been broken.
