The CHS Readers’ Theater team won districts with their performance of “The Annotated Lewis And Alice Show,” and will be performing in the state competition in April.
In Readers’ Theater, performers have their scripts on stage, and memorization is not required. Emily Longman, a Junior who was a chorus member and also contributed to the part of the Caterpillar, finds this very beneficial, though she has most of the show memorized.
“I like the security of having the script there,” she said. “We read some as we go, but the script is more of a guideline.”
In the show, Alice is played by three different people. Each person represents a different personality of Alice. Angry Alice was played by Corrine Yap, the normal Alice by David Behrend, and the sweet, innocent Alice by Laura Kratcha.
“The Annotated Lewis And Alice Show” is loosely based off of Lewis Carrol’s book, “Alice in Wonderland.”
“It went back and forth between Lewis Carrol and his past and the actual Alice story. They overlap more and more as the piece progresses so it gets really funny,” Longman explained.
The show has three directors: Jonathan Smith, Justin Seiwell and Brenda Bollinger.
Lindsey Anderson, a freshman who was in the chorus, feels it opened new doors for her in terms of reading.
“Reading something can bring it to life,” Anderson said. “It is amazing that you can take a simple piece of writing and make it something else.”
