Yadier Molina, the St. Louis Cardinal’s popular catcher, has reportedly agreed to a five year, $75 million contract.
Molina is a three time All Star, and has earned four Gold Glove awards. He is coming off a very strong offensive season, where his batting average was .305.
The contract will give Molina around $15 million a year, and will come into effect in the 2013 season.
CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman first reported this, and the St. Louis Post Dispatch quickly followed. The Cardinals have neither confirmed nor denied the reports.
After star first baseman Albert Pujols departed in free agency, fans are very happy they won’t have to feel that same pain again with Molina.
“I think its a relief, because Molina is one of the best catchers out there,” Freshman Tim Nonet says. “Since the Cardinals didn’t sign Pujols, the Cardinals have a lot of money to spend on other talent. Its good that the money is being spent wisely.”
